In the early waking moments of CXXVI Clothing Co., the idea was pretty simple: Do what we want, because it doesn't matter who likes it, as long as we like it. It turned out that what we were doing happened to appeal to more than just us and thank god, because it's been a very fulfilling ride, even if there have been bumps along the way.

The early stages of CXXVI saw us dabbling in weird, experimental techniques in brand management and production methods. We were literally on a zero dollar budget and had to figure out how to make things look cool and expensive without spending more than a couple bucks here an there. Thankfully, we ran Onetwentysix Design Studios for years and years prior to even entertaining the idea of starting our own clothing company, so the hardest parts were already done in our eyes. We had designed for so many brands, that we knew exactly what it took to bring down a bright-eyed startup.

Our expectations were low and our creativity was rampant; with a little push here and there and a few favors from some good friends, we were in business and on our way to developing what is now CXXVI Clothing Co.

EDWIN DENIM COMING TO RHD

Established in Japan 1947 Mr Tsunemi had a passion for denim, which inspired him to import them directly from the United States as no denim was manufactured in Japan at that time. Used, worn-out and dirty denim which had to be laundered and mended by hand in order to sell on to his customers. In 1951 domestically manufactured denim was available for the first time in Japan. This product was expensive and of inferior quality compared to its American counterparts. Mr Tsumeni was driven to create his own denims, with greater sophistication in fits, washes and quality. From this point on in Edwin denim history, quality, craftsmanship, innovation and integrity have been paramount to the ethos and aesthetic for the brand. In 1961 Mr. Tsunemi crafted the first pair of Edwin denim jeans. Utilising the letters D, E, N, I & M (reversing the M creating a W) he created the brand name ‘Edwin’. By 1963 Edwin had produced the world’s heaviest ringspun denim jean (16oz), featuring the famous three-colour rainbow selvedge, which is still being used today. In the 1970’s Edwin were the first company in the world to develop ‘old wash’ designed to replicate denim which have been worn from its rigid, unwashed state traditionally designed for workwear due to its durability. In the 1980’s Edwin invented ‘stone washing’ which revolutionised the entire denim industry and was a pivotal moment in the evolution of denim manufacturing, thus influencing, every denim company in existence today. In the 1990’s Edwin created the ‘new vintage’ denim concept, which encompasses the subtle beauty of hand replicating vintage washes from archive references pre-dating 1947. Edwin is an authentic denim brand priding itself on innovation and craftsmanship, utilising exclusive fabrics and fabrication, unique technology, hand wash processes, and continual progression in design and fit.

Waking early to the biting Nordic cold, the brand embarked on this shoot with photographer Sacha Maric to the cliffs of Møn, one of Denmark’s most impressive landmarks which shoulders the Baltic sea. A diverse mix of woodlands, cycle paths, ponds and pastures encircle these sheer cliffs creating a hub where they spent the day indulging in the Danish landscape, testing the functionality of the new products in the rough and cold coastal weather. Shown below is the result of another solid offering from Norse Projects.

Our typical PACE denim is made in traditional vintage way on original shuttle looms and comes from small mills around Osaka, Japan. The denim is a right hand twill, ring spun in warp and weft. It’s unique in look and feeling. Using significant details such as split side seams, chainstiching on hem, tab and patch in real leather, buttons have our gearwheel logo in steel finish, zippers in antique copper from the classic brand YKK, strengthened pocket openings on all models, rivets in real genuine copper. All denims are pre-shrunk.

To Wash or Not To Wash

This what happens when you wear your jeans for a year daily without washing them once? NOTHING! U of A student Josh Le with the jeans he wore almost every day without washing them. He is holding bacteria samples taken at 15 months (left) and at 13 days (right).
Josh Le, 20, bought a pair of Nudie Jeans in September 2009. He wore them nearly every day and even slept in them for about a month to really let the sweat shape the creases. He spilled food on it, wiped it off with a paper towel, and kept on going. “I wanted to push it to the extreme,” he said.

But when Le and assistant human ecology professor Rachel McQueen swabbed the inside of the jeans and tested them for bacteria in December 2010, they found levels pretty normal. And after Le washed the jeans, then wore them for 13 days before re-testing them, bacteria levels were nearly identical.

The pair showed off the results on campus Wednesday.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” said McQueen. “What I found was just normal skin flora. The counts were really, really similar. The bacteria load from the swabbed areas were pretty much the same.”

The Flat Head

The Flat Head was established in 1996 by Masayoshi Kobayashi. Kobayashi took vintage denim from the 1920’s through to the 1960’s and deconstructed it to analyze the precise dyeing and stitching techniques. He then set out to produce classic styled clothing made in the same manner as the original garments. As part of this process, he uses only specially selected high quality material and employs highly skilled Japanese craftsmen.

The Flat Head’s selvedge denim is woven on old-style shuttle looms that can ,make only 50 meters of denim per day, however approximately 3 meters of fabric is required to make each pair of jeans, this is a labour of love. The shuttle loom process is time consuming, but the denim produced has a different “touch” and “feel” to that of denim produced on modern looms, thus giving the Flat Head denim products the aura of vintage denim.

As far as the dyeing process is concerned, only the surface of the thread is dyed with indigo, the centre of the thread staying white. The result of this “loop dyeing” is that as the jeans wear with age the denim fades in a beautiful and authentic fashion.

In addition to denim jeans, jackets and shirts, The Flat Head also produces a wide range of other authentically created garments. These include shirts, T shirts, leather goods and knitwear.

Kobayashi says that “At the time of purchase the product is only half complete, it is only fully complete once the garment has melded itself to the unique shape of the individual”

Sugar Cane is a brand of selvage-denim DUNGAREES, not jeans. The word, ”jeans”, has become the vernacular for faux denim fashion wear that masquerades as the tough, classic waist overalls history made famous. You see, “dungarees” are what John Wayne and Gary Cooper wore when fighting off Indians and bad guys. Dungarees are what Marlon Brando and James Dean wore when fighting off girls. And it was dungarees that were worn when the depression-era farmer fought off the bank, the wartime steel worker welded the ships of victory and Mr. Jones entered the army. Sadly, all we have today are “jeans,” until now…
Premium Okinawa Selvage-Denim Dungarees are for those who can appreciate the myriad of nuances and character found in the finest single-malt scotch, the clearest, most colorless diamond or a handcrafted, centuries-old oriental rug. They comprise a blend of traditional dyeing techniques and styling with innovation and creativity in textile development. These dungarees represent the absolute epitome of Japanese selvage denim and are at the heart of the pride of the Sugar Cane brand, being constructed of fibers derived from the plant that gave rise to the brand name – SUGAR CANE. It starts with a basic vintage selvage dungaree style, in this case the famous Lee 101B button-fly, five-pocket cowboy selvage-denim dungarees of 1945. Sugar is made from sugar cane, that seems simple enough, but not everyone knows that sugar cane and its byproducts contain essential amino acids and enzymes necessary to fuel and rejuvenate our bodies. Likewise, byproducts from sugar cane are used to fuel automobiles in Brazil in order to have a less harmful impact on the environment than found in burned fuels of a purely fossil origin. Following these facts in a rather philosophical approach, the textile specialists at Sugar Cane were the first in the world to produce a selvage-denim fabric made from woven cotton yarns and sugar cane fibers. Cotton and sugar cane yarns are dyed completely by hand (no machines of any kind are ever used) following an ancient Japanese technique using only 100% all-natural indigo dyes (no artificial or blended dyes are ever used). Capturing the essence of true vintage selvage dungarees can only be achieved using vintage machinery, so goes the philosophy behind Sugar Cane, so it logically flows that this sumptuous selvage-denim fabric is lovingly crafted into the finished product by the most meticulous technicians using sewing machines from the 1920’s. This philosophy of obsessive attention to detail, historical purity, unsurpassed quality and cutting-edge innovation gives birth to a Hand-Dyed, All-Natural Indigo Okinawa Selvage-Denim Dungaree weighing in at a super-coarse and beefy 14.25 ounces that dazzles the senses with deep, dark indigo coloring and an intoxicating, delicately sweet scent, thanks to a strong helping of sugar cane in the fabric. Over time from wear, laundering and use, this luscious denim yields fade marks, whiskering and striations that could never be achieved with machine-dyed selvage denim made from the typical diluted man-made dyes.

Topping off this style is an Okinawa-theme bandana fabricated from sugar cane in a traditional Japanese print derived from ceremonial robes, plus a matching heavy sugar cane carry sack tote bag. This is the finest denim in the world, where the exotic meets luxury and durability. This is Sugar Cane. Or, as the Japanese call it – Satokibi!

Sugar Cane Hand-Dyed, All-Natural Indigo Okinawa Selvage-Denim Dungarees are only available in the rigid unwashed finish. Times sure have changed. Playing “Cowboys & Indians” outside has been replaced with playing “Halo” or “Call of Duty” in a darkened room. Heck, it’s probably so politically incorrect to even mention “Cowboys & Indians” that someone somewhere is having a tizzy. The American cowboy is an icon of grit, honor, independence and masculinity. Hard work, long days, and little pay except for the open sky, a horse to ride, a hot meal and a drink or two to wet your whistle. Maybe even a dance with a pretty girl if yer’ lucky– and don’t stink to high heaven.

The 1910s – 1930s saw the Wild West American lifestyle move largely from a way of life, to ever-increasing faded memories and mythology. Our country was getting smaller. Technology and transportation were ushering in a new era of industrialized cities and advanced accessibility. The real jean-wearin’ cowboy lifestyle of days past were kept alive over the decades largely through the Western fashions worn by the stars of silver screen and music.

These images are some of my favorite captures of the American cowboy at the very end of his reign– many not surprisingly taken by LIFE photography giants like Loomis Dean, and Ralph Crane to name a few. Some, unfortunately, are uncredited. If you know the pic, give me a shout so I can give the photographer their due, please.

How To: Make a DIY, Best Made Co.-Inspired High End Hammer

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Peter Buchanan-Smith and Best Made Co., and I haven't been able to shake the imagery of their color-adorned urban axes since. I can't help but check out the ax and shovel handles at the hardware store and garden center. And while I have immense respect for Best Made Co. and their amazing work, I'm just not at the point in my life where I can swing investing in a high-end functional art piece.
But that doesn't mean I couldn't take a cue from their bold color meets wood-grain handles and deep silver blades - so I decided to create my own colorful high-end tool, using a claw hammer. And you can too.
Materials and Tools

New hammer - looks matter most here. Look for a hammer with a wood handle and clean silver head. I wasn't able to find one at the big chain home centers, so check your local, smaller hardware stores. Ours was only $5.69.

Several colors spray paint

1. Begin by choosing your colors a deciding on your pattern and stripe size. Then cover the head and top of the handle with the plastic bag, and secure with painter's tape. Then cover the rest of the handle until just the bottom of the handle is exposed. Be sure your taped-off section terminates in a straight line. Make your lines a mix of parrallel and angles for visual interest.

2. Working outside or in a well-ventilated space, spray on your first color. Hold the can back 10-12" and work in thin, even coats until you can no longer see the wood grain. Allow to dry, then peel off the tape to check your work. The paint may peel off on the tape, but you shoudn't have any problems on the wood.

3. Repeat for each color, peeling off the tape along the handle and creating straight lines for boundaries. Be sure to cover your previous work when adding new colors. Allow each coat to dry for 2-3 hours, using a vice or clamp (if you have one) to keep the handle vertical. You could also support the hammer head with heavy books or bricks.

4. Once you've added the final color and allowed it to dry, carefully peel off each layer of tape. Then, just hang it up!

To date, the best I’ve found is John Cope’s Gourmet White Popping Corn. Not surprisingly, Cope’s is a brand full of heritage – founded in 1900, rich in Pennsylvania Dutch history, and allegedly popular with President Eisenhower. Those things are not particularly important here, instead the quality of the texture and the flavor of the popping corn are key. Judging by the number of bared ankles appearing on the streets this summer, the rolled cuff look of 2009 appears to have become the rolled cuff epidemic of 2010. Legions of young men, including ones who are not bicycle messengers, are rolling up their pants legs to such high-water lengths that one is tempted to inquire where exactly the auditions for the Huckleberry Finn revival are being held. A style born on the shores of the Mississippi has been reinvented for the streets of Bushwick.
“It’s almost like a masculine shabby chic,” said Tom Julian, a fashion consultant and the author of two men’s style books with Nordstrom.
Every five years or so, the fashionable male discovers some styling trick to make the same old thing wearable in a dandy new way — the deep jeans cuff, the double-flipped shirt-sleeve cuff — and the next thing you know, men are trying it in Midtown.
The newest look, a lightly pinched cuff that should fall about an inch or two above the ankle, is likely a result of two factors. First, the skin-baring shrunken-suit style popularized by Thom Browne has, by now, become as acceptable to the mainstream as flat-front khakis. And second, the glorified boat shoes and retro canvas sneakers on the market seem to cry out to be worn with pants that will show them off. (A third, less likely factor might be the heat.)
“As cropped pants have become such a style, this is an easy way to get around shortening your pants by three inches,” said Josh Peskowitz, the style editor of Esquire.com, who had rolled up his pants that very morning. “It’s noncommittal.”
Getting the roll right is harder than it looks, and the experts differ on technique. Mr. Julian suggests rolling one inch of cuff three times for cotton canvas trousers, and a single two-inch cuff for dark jeans.
For slightly looser pants, like chinos, Mr. Peskowitz advises creating a peg by pinching the fabric slightly at the front during the rolling process. Starting from the bottom, you flip once, making as small a fold as possible, then twist the front of the pants leg by about an inch, then roll twice more while holding the pinch tightly. The pleats should stay in place.
“You want to make sure that both are pointing inward — for the left side, fold it to the right. For the right, fold it to the left — to stay symmetrical,” he said. “I just figured that out a couple of weeks ago.”
By the way, there are several don’ts. No formal shoes. No rolled-up skinny jeans. No wool pants — the rolls won’t stay. No bootleg pants, which should be burned anyway. And since rolled pants are meant to look casual, nothing about the outfit should be dressy, at the risk of looking too studied. While you’re at it, stop trying so hard.
Jim Moore, the creative director of GQ, said the goal should be to look nonchalant, since you don’t want to make the roll so perfect that it draws attention. “The roll has to feel a bit unintentional,” he said.
Given the unlikelihood of accidentally rolling up one’s pants, Mr. Moore offered some clarification: “You have to channel Johnny Depp for that moment and ask yourself, ‘How would Johnny Depp roll up the bottom of his pants?’ ”
If you still can’t figure it out, you might ask Mr. Depp about shorts.

Launching today — for all you denim loving patriots — at the Levi Strauss & Co. flagship store in San Francisco (Union Square) is the Levi’s Tailor Shop, a one-of-a-kind customization area with special goods and services. The LS&CO folks have outfitted the Tailor Shop with a chain stitch machine, an embroidery machine and a darning machine (for repairs or maybe just to get the repaired look). At the tailor shop you can also make your own buttons, choose vintage patches, screen print to fully customize your jeans.

In addition to all of the customization equipment there are also a few special displays of 50 vintage trucker jackets with chain stitch embroidery (one for each state; my two favorite states pictured below), collections of vintage labels, back packets, back patches and an array of famous Levi’s red tabs. The good people at Levi’s even tapped Field Notes to create special red white and blue limited edition notebooks — something I’m sure Draplin loved doing. (Side note: when is the rest of that documentary going to be released? WTF!)
The shop’s displays are made from industrial tables, racks and bins from Steele canvas, Grainger and our friends at Cleveland Art. Good stuff. From what I hear, The Tailor Shop has a bunch of new stuff coming down the road — so stay tuned. Now if they can just open one in New York City…

Another Canadian entrant at the recent (capsule) tradeshow was Naked & Famous as they showcased their denim team-up with Kojima-based MOMOTARO. Produced in Okayama, Japan, the denim is made on old shuttle looms and the hems are done with a union special chain stitch, a lamb leather patch and MOMOTARO’s signature pink stitching are also featured. The Naked & Famous Denim x MOMOTARO jeans will be available at Barneys New York as of October 2010.

Naked & Famous Denim Stainless Steel Jeans

Naked & Famous look to push the boundaries of denim with their upcoming stainless steel jean. Integrating 10% 4 ply wire Riken stainless steel into the weave, surprisingly the feel is relatively the same as prototypical raw denim however the inclusion of stainless steel creates a much harder creasing jean. Only 200 pairs will be made and released.

Here is a look at Japanese brand Haversack Attire Spring/Summer 2011 collection look book. With three lines to focus their designing attention to, Haversack talk about their inspirational separations between the three, its main label featuring “items deeply reflected by military uniform and hunting wear, accentuating the collection’s masculinity and elegance.” Haversack General Garments, which “takes the essence of French labor wear from the 1900′s and sailing cloths.” and Haversack Attire, “influenced by the 30-40′s upper classes’ resort fashion of Riviera and Palm Beach.”

Last week we got our first glimpse of the Vans Syndicate Zero Lo, a shoe designed by the talented Luke Meier. Combining a more contemporary approach to a skate shoe which is also functional makes for a hugely impressive piece. If you are not a fan of the navy version, this tan colorway is certain to be a hit with the luxury suede upper able to enhance the rich color.
